“It means a lot to me to receive a scholarship from GBHEM because of how important the Methodist Church has been to me throughout my life.”

– Abigail Smith, Colorado State University

Abigail Smith is on a mission to protect the natural world — and thanks to the Rev. Dr. Karen Layman Gift of Hope Scholarship, she is one step closer to making that dream a reality. A student at Colorado State University, Smith is pursuing a major in wildlife conservation to gain the knowledge and skills needed to help protect the environment.

The $1,000 scholarship, awarded by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), is a game-changer for Smith. “This scholarship decreases the financial burden my family faces in letting me pursue an out-of-state education,” she says. “It means a lot to me to receive a scholarship from GBHEM because of how important the Methodist Church has been to me throughout my life.”

From a young age, Smith has felt a deep calling to protect the planet. She hopes her career will lead her to become a park ranger or to work for the Environmental Protection Agency. “By attending Colorado State University, I’ll dive deeper into conservation, gain access to scientific resources, and live in a new community where I can grow spiritually and personally.”

Her impact extends beyond the classroom. Through her local United Methodist Church, she’s taken part in initiatives like Plastic Free July, an effort to reduce single-use plastics within her congregation. Her church also runs a Hope Center, a year-round ministry that provides food and clothing to people experiencing homelessness. These experiences, she says, have been crucial in shaping her understanding of how faith and environmental stewardship intersect.

The Rev. Dr. Karen Layman Gift of Hope Scholarship provides financial relief and symbolizes the support Smith receives from The United Methodist Church, which encourages young people to follow their passions and serve the world. “I’m so thankful for the Methodist Church’s ongoing support in helping me pursue my dreams.”

GBHEM Scholarship Program

Every year, an average of $4 million is awarded to help students in the United States and abroad pursue their dreams through higher education. With this financial aid, GBHEM is opening pathways for students of all backgrounds to earn their degrees and serve as the next generation of leaders for the church and the world. Learn more.
