God calls each of us to serve. In The United Methodist Church, clergy leadership takes different forms, each shaped by distinct gifts, callings, and contexts of ministry. Whether you’re exploring ministry or ready to take the next step, there is a path forward.

Start with Your Call

Every journey into ministry begins with discernment — listening for where God is leading and how your gifts can serve the church and the world. The church provides guidance, formation, and support as you explore what’s next.

Ways to Serve

Elders

Elders

Ordained clergy who lead through Word, Service, Sacrament, and Order. They:

  • Preach and teach the Word of God
  • Administer Baptism and Holy Communion
  • Provide pastoral care and spiritual leadership
  • Order the life of the church for mission and ministry

Elders serve in local churches and in extension ministries such as chaplaincy, education, and counseling, equipping communities for faithful witness and service.

Deacons

Ordained clergy called to ministries of Word, Service, Compassion, and Justice. They:

  • Lead ministries of outreach and engagement
  • Serve in both church and community-based settings
  • Help connect the church’s life with the needs of the world

Deacons embody a ministry that extends beyond the congregation, helping the church live out its mission in daily life.

Licensed Local Pastors

Licensed clergy appointed to serve in a specific ministry setting. They:

  • Preach, teach, and lead worship
  • Provide pastoral care and guidance
  • Administer sacraments within their appointment
  • Lead congregations in discipleship and mission

Local pastors serve where they are appointed, offering faithful leadership within a particular community.

Chaplaincy & Endorsed Ministries

Some clergy are called to serve beyond the local church.

Through the United Methodist Endorsing Agency, clergy are endorsed and supported for ministry in specialized settings such as:

  • Healthcare and hospitals
  • Military and government service
  • Counseling and care organizations
  • Community and crisis response

These ministries extend the church’s presence into the world, offering care, guidance, and hope in diverse contexts.
