For Themba Chawinga, a student at Africa University, the financial support he receives through The United Methodist Church’s General Board of Higher Education and Ministry’s International Grants and Scholarship Program is life changing.
Thanks to the (GRASP) scholarship, Chawinga is focusing on his studies without the constant worry of tuition and living expenses. “Your support is greatly appreciated. I am now able to register for my semester courses in due time and see my final examination results without obstacles from the finance office here at Africa University,” he said.
As a student in the arts with education program, Chawinga is gaining essential skills in school management and teaching methods. “College is a place to gain a competitive edge,” he said, adding that graduating with an honors degree will help him compete for jobs in education.
The university is opening doors to valuable relationships with faculty and peers, creating a network to support his career advancement. He is involved in football and swimming. “These activities help me stay connected with multiple students and appreciate the cultural diversity of Africa,” he said.
As part of the peer service unit leadership program, Chawinga plays a pivotal role in helping fellow students through their personal challenges. “Under this leadership program, we work as counselors, helping students find means of coping with their challenges,” he said. Additionally, his involvement in the Malawi community’s social welfare club has expanded his understanding of service and leadership.
The scholarship is a source of motivation for Chawinga, reinforcing his commitment to his studies and his belief in the transformative power of education. “GRASP will relieve the pain and feelings that I was having toward my education,” he said. “This is a big support and motivation that every student like me deserves to get from all corners of the education environment.”
