Howard University Graduate Reflects on Future in Medicine, Commitment to Community

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Scholarship recipient Lenah Alghali has set her sights on a future rooted in service and scholarship after graduating from Howard University. Alghali, one of the 290 General Board of Higher Education and Ministry scholarship recipients graduating this spring, plans to attend medical school and specialize in obstetrics and gynecology.
“Five years after graduation, I envision myself thriving in my OB/GYN residency, honing my skills in patient care and women’s health,” Alghali said. Her ultimate goal is to specialize in high-risk obstetrics, contributing to research and improving treatment outcomes. “I want to combine clinical excellence with advocacy for women’s health, making a meaningful impact on my patients’ lives while mentoring the next generation.”
Alghali credits her church with shaping her commitment to service. Through initiatives such as a weekly food pantry, monthly health fairs and after-school tutoring, her church works to meet both immediate needs and long-term development goals in the community.
“We also offer scholarships and sponsor a community garden,” she said. “It’s about fostering support and inclusivity while promoting healthy living and education.”
For Alghali, higher education is more than a personal milestone—it’s a responsibility. “Going to college or seminary embodies the belief that knowledge is power,” she said. “It’s about gaining the tools to effect meaningful change and inspiring others to do the same.”
As she prepares for the next chapter of her academic and professional journey, Alghali remains rooted in her values of compassion and service.
