ATLANTA — Morgan Cebrun, a student at Clark Atlanta University, is one step closer to her dream of becoming a pediatric physician assistant, thanks to a scholarship from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM). The award eases the financial strain of college and empowers her to stay focused on her rigorous academic path at one of the 11 United Methodist-related Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

“For me, this scholarship is more than just financial support — it’s a vote of confidence in my future,” Cebrun said. “It allows me to concentrate on my studies and clinical preparation without constantly worrying about tuition.”

Balancing coursework with her long-term goal of serving children in underserved communities, the GBHEM scholarship is a bridge between aspiration and achievement. Her passion for pediatric care is rooted in a desire to make health care more accessible and compassionate.

“I’ve always wanted to work with kids,” she said. “Being a physician assistant means I can be hands-on in their care, advocate for their needs, and build trust with families.”

The scholarship, part of GBHEM’s commitment to supporting United Methodist students in higher education, reflects its mission to nurture future leaders in service and faith. For Cebrun, it reminds her that she is not walking this journey alone.

“This support means everything,” she said. “It’s helping me stay on track, stay motivated and stay hopeful.”

When [Sojourner Truth] was presented with arguments based on faith that would oppress women and former slaves alike, she asked, “Where did your Christ come from?” I think this is a great question that still resonates today. It makes me question myself, “How often has my faith served to justify my actions?” Too often, faith has served to justify genocide, wars, slavery, discrimination, and many other repulsive acts. Too often, we have used Christ to justify the evil that comes from our hearts.
