At United Theological Seminary, theological education is about more than simply earning your degree. United is a place where academic preparation intersects with spiritual formation and practical application for the work of ministry in the world.
A seminary of The United Methodist Church, United brings together students from many backgrounds in a community that embodies the Kingdom of God. Representing different denominations, races and nationalities, students come together in a faith-filled community, united by a desire to follow God’s call on their lives.
United Theological Seminary traces its history to the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. Under the leadership of Rev. Milton Wright, chair of the denomination’s board of education and father of aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright, the Church of the United Brethren in Christ established its school for the preparation of Christian leaders in 1871. For more than 150 years, United has continued that spirit of innovation embodied by visionaries like Bishop Wright, ever seeking to prepare faithful and fruitful Christian leaders to make disciples of Jesus Christ.
Today, United reflects the traditions of the United Brethren, Evangelical United Brethren and United Methodist churches through an academic emphasis on the historic faith in Jesus Christ passed down to us and on scriptural holiness for personal transformation and the transformation of the world. The Spirit of God is moving at United, and United seeks to join in the transforming work of the Holy Spirit to equip future leaders who will bring God’s renewal to the Church.
