The following are standard criteria for EVERY program offered through GBHEM:
- Applicants must be an ACTIVE, full member of The United Methodist Church for at least ONE year. Membership is determined by the date the applicant was confirmed and took membership vows with a United Methodist church. (Members of other Methodist denominations are not eligible.)
- Applicants must be pursuing a degree program at ANY accredited institution within the U.S.
- High school students may apply IF they will be college students in the fall term.
- Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
- Applicants are required to be full-time students according to their school’s standards for the program for which they are enrolled.
The Allan Jerome Burry Scholarship
This scholarship is designed to recognize a UM student’s outstanding academic performance, leadership skills, and participation in the activities of a UM-related campus ministry or chaplaincy program at a college or university. Applicants must be nominated by the campus minister/chaplain; be an active, full member of the UMC for at least 3 years; GPA of 3.0+; and demonstrate financial need. Applications and nomination forms for the Burry award are available on this site and must be returned to the Office of Loans and Scholarships by the deadline.
The Helen and Allen Brown Scholarship
For students from the Nashville District of the Tennessee Annual Conference OR the New Orleans District of the Louisiana Annual Conference. Applicant must have been a full and active member of The UMC for at least 3 years; an undergraduate student, GPA of 3.0+; and must demonstrate financial need.
The Bishop Joseph B. Bethea Scholarship
Undergraduate scholarship for African American students. Applicant must be a member of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Black Methodists for Church Renewal (SEJBMCR); citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.; GPA of 2.8+; and demonstrate financial need.
The Ethnic Minority Scholarship
Undergraduate award for Native American, Asian, African American, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander ethnic groups. Applicants must be pursuing his/her FIRST undergraduate degree; GPA of 2.5+; full and active member of the UMC for at least one year; attending an accredited institution within the U.S. International students must be enrolled in a United Methodist college or university within the U.S. and must be recommended by the president of the UM institution.
The Rev. Dr. Karen Layman Gift of Hope: 21st Century Scholars Program
$1000 undergraduate award for applicants who have been active and full members of the UMC for at least 3 years prior to application; must demonstrate strong leadership in the UMC; GPA of 3.0+. International students must be enrolled in a United Methodist college or university within the U.S. and must be recommended by the president of the UM institution.
