New Book Explores the Intersections of Faith and Religion on College Campuses
The Publishing Office of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), leadership development agency for the denomination, announced the release of a new book, “Intersections: Faith, Church, and the Academy.” Mark E. Hanshaw, Ph.D., J.D., and Timothy S. Moore, D.Min., MLitt., general editors. “Intersections” shows the innovation and inspired engagement happening on United Methodist-related colleges and universities. While crafted to serve the needs of church leaders, administrators, and faculty, students are the most important audience for this volume, because they are best positioned to reshape our world in ways that respond to the increased diversity within our communities.
As colleges and universities strive to educate students for leadership in communities, businesses, churches, governments, and other environments, these future leaders must also prepare for interfaith cooperation in an increasingly religiously pluralistic world. Through a variety of themed essays, the book explores the effect that engagements or intersections between individuals of diverse faith backgrounds and belief systems may have on campuses, communities and students. “Intersections” specifically examines how faith-based institutions can respond to religious diversity on campus.
Hanshaw serves as the associate general secretary of the Division of Higher Education at GBHEM. Moore is the director of Donor Development for Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina.
