GBHEM Scholarship Supports Kayla Hennigan’s Dream of Serving Underrepresented Communities

“The community I’ve found at Dillard has pushed me to excel in ways I never imagined. I’ve gained knowledge that will last far beyond graduation, and I’ve had the opportunity to inspire and mentor others, which has been incredibly fulfilling.”

Kayla Hennigan, a senior at Dillard University in New Orleans, is pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor and public health advocate. A recipient of multiple scholarships from the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry (GBHEM), Hennigan is dedicated to improving healthcare access in underserved communities.
“Although becoming a doctor has always been my dream, I am passionate about serving as a public health advocate and being a valuable asset to underrepresented communities,” Hennigan said. “My ultimate goal is to create a more equitable healthcare system where everyone, regardless of background, has the opportunity to achieve optimal health.”
Hennigan’s commitment to community service is reflected in her work outside the classroom. As a member of various campus outreach programs, she spends time feeding and serving the homeless. “The experience of interacting with those less fortunate has pushed me to live the word of God and reinforced my sense of humility and gratitude,” she said.
For Hennigan, attending an HBCU, supported by the Black College Fund through GBHEM, has been an invaluable experience. “The community I’ve found at Dillard has pushed me to excel in ways I never imagined,” she said. “I’ve gained knowledge that will last far beyond graduation, and I’ve had the opportunity to inspire and mentor others, which has been incredibly fulfilling.”
The scholarships have also had a profound impact on her faith and outlook. “This summer has been a season of waiting, but I’ve trusted in the Lord through the uncertainties,” Hennigan said. “Matthew 6:34 has been a source of strength for me: ‘Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself.'”
As she prepares for her final year, Hennigan is focused on applying to top Master of Public Health programs, thanks in part to the support from the GBHEM scholarships. “This award has allowed me to focus more intently on my senior year and pursue my career goals with confidence,” she said.
