GBHEM Scholarship Empowers Purtell’s Path Toward Forensic Science

Jacquelyn Purtell’s journey to becoming a forensic scientist is fueled by ambition and faith. Studying chemistry at Oklahoma City University with a focus on Pre-Law, Purtell envisions herself working as a forensic scientist in five years, making meaningful contributions to the fields of science and law. She wants to combine her passion for justice and science, helping to improve systems that impact people’s lives.
Purtell’s academic dreams would not be possible without financial support. The $1,000 Ethnic Scholarship from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry significantly helps her ability to afford college. “This scholarship is a blessing,” she shares. “It helps make my education a reality and motivates me to keep pushing toward my goals. Without it, I would not be able to afford my education at Oklahoma City University.”
Purtell’s faith plays a central role in her journey. Deeply involved in her church’s community service efforts, she participates in outreach projects like the “Feeding 5000” food pantry to volunteering in downtown Dallas to help underserved communities.
For Purtell, these experiences are more than acts of service; they are opportunities to connect with others, foster compassion, and grow in her faith. “Service to the community is important because it connects me to the people I serve and helps me grow both personally and spiritually,” she says.
By providing financial assistance, the GBHEM scholarships open doors for students to pursue their passions, contribute to their communities, and make a lasting impact on their chosen fields. With this scholarship, Purtell is one step closer to achieving her dream of becoming a forensic scientist and returning to serve her community, especially her tribe, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
