GBHEM General Secretary Rev. Greg Bergquist Awarded Honorary Doctorate

Nashville, Tenn. | May 19, 2022 – The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) is pleased to announce General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Greg Bergquist was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Claremont School of Theology. 

Honorary degrees are awarded to individuals who have achieved eminence in their field and have made significant contributions to society.

Bergquist has a highly distinguished background, serving as an ordained clergyperson for 35 years. He was appointed to the role of General Secretary of GBHEM in Jan. 2020 and has been instrumental in facilitating educational conversations with key voices across the world. Under his leadership, Bergquist has led a process to transform GBHEM into a fully inclusive agency with a mission to strengthen and promote United Methodist theological and higher education worldwide in collaboration with Pan-Methodist and ecumenical partners. Throughout the United Methodist community, he is well known for his integrity, inclusive leadership style, futuristic thinking, and spiritual character. 

Rev. Bergquist currently holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Florida, as well as a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology. 

“I am grateful and honored by this recognition of my ministry. It has been a privilege to support and collaborate with the transformative and innovative mission of such a prestigious institution,” said Bergquist.
