I have attended a United Methodist church all or most of my life, do I qualify for a scholarship?
No, you must be a confirmed member of The United Methodist Church. Membership is determined by the date the applicant was confirmed and took membership vows with a United Methodist church.
Applicants must be active, full members of The United Methodist Church for at least one year. Three years memberships is required for some programs . Membership will be verified.
May I apply for more than one scholarship?
No. When the online application is completed, a scan will be run, and you will be considered for one program for which you may be eligible.
If I am an international student, may I apply for a scholarship?
Yes, if you meet the requirements for minimum scholarship requirement.
Is there a scholarship for a pastor’s dependent/child?
While there is no specific scholarship for clergy dependents, they can apply for other UM scholarships. Many UM-related colleges and universities have scholarships and tuition discounts specifically for clergy dependents.
Are scholarships funded by church apportionments?
No, funding comes from Special Sunday offerings (United Methodist Student Day, World Communion Sunday and Native American Ministries Sunday), restricted endowments, wills and annuities, and other special donations/gifts.
I don’t know yet what school I will be attending. May I still apply?

Who is eligible to apply for a scholarship?
Applicants must meet the general scholarship criteria found here to be considered for any program offered through GBHEM.
How do I update my contact information or college name?
Address, email and college name can be updated on the application form until the application deadline. After the application deadline, this information can be updated on the “Profile” page at aim.applyists.com.
What are the selection criteria for scholarships?
An independent selection committee will evaluate the applications and will select the recipients based upon restricted criteria as set by the initial endowment or program being reviewed.
How and when will I receive scholarship notification?
Notifications are sent via email to recipients and applicants not selected to receive an award approximately three months after the final deadline. Add firstname.lastname@example.org to your email address book or “safe senders list” so these important emails are not sent to your junk mail folder. Do not “opt out” of any email sent from email@example.com. If you do, you may not receive vital information regarding your scholarship application.
What are my responsibilities if I am chosen as a scholarship recipient?
You must provide a verification of enrollment form for the fall term. You must enroll in the fall of the year in which the scholarship is awarded and return a verification of enrollment to claim your scholarship check.
How and when are scholarship checks issued?
Your scholarship check will be mailed after Sept. 1 upon receipt of a class schedule, verification or a proof of enrollment form from your institution. All checks will be made payable to the school and will be mailed directly to the college/university.
Are scholarships taxable?
Tax laws vary by country. In the United States, scholarship funds used exclusively for the payment of tuition or textbooks are normally not taxable. The scholarship recipient is responsible for taxes, if any, that may be assessed against your scholarship award. We recommend consulting your tax adviser for more guidance. You may also consult IRS Publication 970 for further information.
Do I need to attend a United Methodist-related school to apply for a scholarship?
No, but you must be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education. However, you may be eligible for more scholarship programs when enrolled in a United Methodist-related institution. Some programs are awarded based on the institution attended. Students who transfer from one institution to another must verify the criteria of the award received to determine if the award may be retained.
Do I have to be going into the ministry to receive a scholarship?
Are part-time students eligible for a scholarship?
Scholarship recipients should be enrolled full-time and pursuing a degree at an accredited institution; however, committees may consider part-time applicants under extenuating circumstances.
Do I have to reapply each year?
Yes. Students may reapply each year as long as they continue to meet the eligibility criteria.
How many awards can a student receive from the office of Loans and Scholarships?
A student may receive GBHEM scholarships for a maximum of seven years. Renewal applicants will not be considered for an eighth academic year for GBHEM scholarships.
