Nurturing Leaders. Changing Lives.

The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry stands ready to walk with you, helping you every step of the way and connecting you to the resources you need to claim and flourish in your calling or career regardless of whether you are a:

  • student considering or attending a United Methodist-related college or university at the start of your educational journey.
  • student pursuing licensing or ordination.
  • clergyperson looking for a chance to learn and grow.

Why choose a United Methodist college or university?

Students attending a United Methodist college or university find more than just a world-class education. They find a community that nurtures their spirit, as well as their mind.

  • Methodists were among the first to advocate for greater educational opportunities for all people regardless of race, class or gender. United Methodist schools carry on that tradition by embracing and training young leaders of all backgrounds.
  • United Methodist schools offer academic courses and co-curricular programs that help students explore faith and delve into questions of higher purpose and meaning.
  • Our schools foster a commitment to service. Students have opportunities to take an active role in improving the world around them and to become engaged citizens in their community.
  • Our schools welcome students of all religions and creeds, and encourage diversity of thought on campus.
  • United Methodist schools have caring faculty and staff members who are committed to helping each student find his or her calling in life.

One of the major obstacles to students preparing for their future at a college or university is a lack of financial resources. Every year, we award an average of $4 million to help students pursue their dreams and open pathways for people of all backgrounds to earn their degrees and serve as the next generation of leaders.

Our History

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, believed deeply in the importance of education and its role in spiritual formation. He supported and helped found schools, especially for the poor.

Continuing Wesley’s journey, GBHEM is deeply involved in education and students’ spiritual development, providing the resources needed to pursue their calling and to lead the next generation to Christ. We seek to nurture principled difference-makers — Christians who care about making the world a better place.
