Connecting the Church and Academy

The General Board of Higher Education & Ministry (GBHEM) connects the church and the academy while developing transformational leaders for ministry. Our grants help ensure access to quality education and strengthen The United Methodist Church worldwide. 

In 2024, GBHEM dispersed $17.5 million in grants, 

  • Helping to support 11 historic black college and universities
  • Facilitating connectivenesss among campus ministries,
  • Providing technical assistance in the Central Conferences and 
  • Recruiting and educating clergy in the Central Conferences.

Open Grants

Worldwide Theological Education Grants, typically for $1,000 to $5,000

Funds cultivation of Wesleyan and United Methodist scholarship beyond the United States. Special emphasis is placed on resource development and consultations that support systems to equip church leadership in the UMC Central Conferences and Mission Initiatives.

Clergywomen Network Grants, typically for $1,000 to $5,000

Supports initiatives to strengthen or cultivate clergywomen networks throughout the United Methodist connection with an emphasis on regional associations, events and in-person gatherings.

Chaplain & Campus Ministry Network Development Grants for $2,000 to $5,000

Supports in-person gatherings to build relationships among United Methodist campus ministers and chaplains. Cross-jurisdictional convenings that engage participants in spiritual practices of discernment will be prioritized.
