The Advanced Course of Study (ACOS) provides a pathway for licensed local pastors who have completed the Course of Study to meet educational requirements for probationary membership, full conference membership, and ordination in The United Methodist Church. Pastors age 40+ may qualify for elder ordination with 32 hours of graduate theological study. As you discern your path, explore the Summer 2026, Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 course offerings.

Advanced Course of Study Curriculum

A total of 32 credit hours are required to graduate from Advanced Course of Study. Each Annual Conference may require additional credit hours.

The following United Methodist Studies courses are required by the Book of Discipline (¶ 324.4) and for provisional membership. United Methodist Studies courses must be included in a student’s overall 32 credit hours. The three United Methodist Studies courses must equal a total of 6 credit hours:

  • United Methodist Doctrine
  • United Methodist Polity
  • United Methodist History

The following Basic Graduate Theological Studies courses must be completed within the 32-hour Advanced Course of Study requirement. Advanced Course of Study credit hours vary at each educational institution and shall not be taken pass/fail. (¶ 324.4)

Select electives based on your Annual Conference guidelines. Some courses are cross-listed (e.g., Mission and Evangelism) and may be used toward a concentration. Note: Advanced COS courses are not introductory; foundational material is covered in Course of Study.

ACOS UM History explores the origins of the Methodist movement in 18th‑century England and its expansion into North America. You’ll examine key figures, practices, and developments that shaped early Methodism and gain the historical grounding needed to participate fully in the life and leadership of The United Methodist Church.

ACOS UM Polity focuses on United Methodist polity and governance including its doctrine, mission, ordination, and connectional structure.

ACOS UM Doctrine introduces you to a practical understanding of United Methodist doctrine, its origins and sources, its shape and character, and its practices and contexts for ministry within our world.

ACOS Old Testament deepens your understanding and exegetical interpretation of the Hebrew scriptures and their application in your pastoral and personal life.

ACOS New Testament builds upon your knowledge of the Gospel and other New Testament scriptures and faithful interpretation in your pastoral and personal life.

ACOS Theology continues to explore your relationship to God and critically reflects upon God’s activity in the world and interprets it to the people you are appointed to serve.

ACOS Church History examines different aspects of how the Christian community has developed over time.

ACOS Mission of the Church in the World expands your understanding of Wesley’s social holiness and justice within your ministry context across diverse and global settings.

ACOS Evangelism teaches you that evangelism is the broad sharing of the Good News of Jesus Christ across generations through genuine relationships and accountable discipleship. You’ll explore how these practices nurture spiritual growth and support the flourishing of the Christian community.

ACOS Worship & Sacraments deepens your knowledge and appreciation of praising God within a community of faith.
