“Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities” is a documentary that examines the impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on U.S. history, culture and identity. The work of The Black College Fund at GBHEM supports the 11 United Methodist-related historically Black colleges and universities and is included within the documentary.

In the book, Lawrence explores the meaning for the requiem as a voice of hope for Christians. Lawrence explains that the word “requiem” heralds the promise of resurrection and power of life. A requiem is not about death, rather it is a prayer that accepts Jesus’s redemptive sacrifice, trusts in his resurrection, and finds abundant life. Lawrence asserts that this can help Christians be confident and remain unshaken by the challenges we face as faith communities and as a denomination.

GBHEM announced the appointment of Sarah E. Bollinger, Ph.D., as the director of Leadership Development in Collegiate Ministry in the Division of Higher Education’s Office of Collegiate Ministry. Bollinger’s appointment is effective January 16, 2018.

GBHEM is honored to announce the latest addition to its more than 70 scholarship funds. The Rubie Plant Butterworth Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance to individuals attending one of the 13 United Methodist seminaries and pursuing ordination as a deacon. The creation of the scholarship fund was initiated by Jim Butterworth who was looking for a way to honor his mother for her 90th birthday and years of service in The United Methodist Church.

The IAMSCU Board of Directors elected Rev. Dr. Tom Wolfe, president and chief executive officer of Iliff School of Theology, as the acting president of the organization. Wolfe is a former member of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry’s (GBHEM) board of directors, past University Senate president, and was the IAMSCU vice president.

The CCTEF met in Nashville, Tennessee at GBHEM offices in early December 2017. The group meets on an annual basis to select recipients for the CCTEF grants, and every four years a new executive committee is selected.

GBHEM recently partnered with the Methodist School of Theology in São Paulo, Brazil to host an event for 87 Brazilian candidates for ministry, most between ages 17 to 25, in the Methodist Church in Brazil. POV or Programa de Orientação Vocacional (Vocational Orientation Program) is an annual event that opens the school of theology to the candidates, introducing them to the faculty and staff, school structures and academic procedures, while emphasizing the focus on spiritual life and encouraging participants to listen, discern and respond to God’s call for their lives.
