Doctorate-Level Scholarships

Apply for any of the scholarships listed below at: The GBHEM scholarship application opens in January of each year. You need only to submit one application per year where it will be screened for all possible eligible programs. You may indicate on the scholarship application first page which of these programs you would most like to be considered.

  • Baker Scholarship

    Designated for current United Methodist campus ministers, who have been in campus ministry for at least 3 years. Must have received an MDiv degree or equivalent; be pursuing advanced training (i.e., doctorate degree, certification, or independent study); minimum 3.0 GPA. Must be committed to remaining in campus ministry.

  • Diaconia Graduate Fellowship

    $1,000 - $10,000

    For deacons in full connection, commissioned deacon candidates moving toward ordination as deacon who have completed one year of probation, or diaconal ministers in the UMC. Full-time doctoral students (preferably PhD) during the time of the first award period in an accredited academic institution; plan to serve in positions appropriate for the ordained deacon.  Learn more about this scholarship.

  • Esther Edwards


    For a Female administrator or faculty member pursuing a Ph.D. in leadership working for a United Methodist-related institution.

  • Rosalie Bentzinger


    For an Ordained Deacon pursuing a PhD in Christian Education; enrolled in a University Senate-approved seminary; minimum 3 year membership in the UMC; minimum 3.0 GPA.

  • Women of Color Scholars

    $3,000 - $10,000

    For females born of African, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American parent (at least one parent); pursuing a PhD or ThD within the field of religious studies who desires to serve on the faculty or in an executive administrative position at a UM-related Theological School; minimum 3 year membership in the UMC; minimum 3.0 GPA.
