OUR MISSION
Founded in 1876, Meharry Medical College, a United Methodist Church affiliated school, is the nation’s largest, private, independent historically black, academic health center dedicated solely to educating minority and other health professionals. The College is particularly well known for its uniquely nurturing, highly effective educational programs; emerging preeminence in health disparities research; culturally sensitive, evidence-based health services; and significant contribution to the diversity of the nation’s health professions workforce. Diverse Issues in Higher Education’s ranking of institutions annually lists Meharry as a leading national educator of African Americans with M.D. and D.D.S. degrees, and Ph.D. degrees in the biomedical sciences.
OUR SCHOOLS
School of Dentistry (SOD) - Dr. William B. Butler, Dean

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program is a four-year program that accepts one resident per year. There are six (6) positions available each year in the one-year General Practice Residency Program. The school has an extensive community based education program and conducts many events annually to assist in the improvement of healthcare and the quality of life in our surrounding communities. Our graduates are noted locally, nationally, and internationally for their achievements, performance, vigor, vitality, and dedication to providing care for the underserved.
School of Medicine (SOM) - Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, Dean
The School of Medicine is the oldest and largest of the three schools at Meharry. It admits 96 medical students and some 30 residents annually. Its residents train in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Occupational Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology or Psychiatry. The School is nationally recognized for its community-based and academic programs. National centers and programs have been established to address sickle cell anemia, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, environmental health, teen pregnancy, cancer, kidney failure, aging and more, all directed at the elimination of health disparities. The School’s faculty, staff and students actively serve the community in many ways: mentoring for high school and college students; Health Careers Opportunity Programs for elementary, high school and college students; speakers on health topics and more. Graduates of Meharry Medical College continue the commitment of the founding fathers by practicing in underserved urban and rural communities. Meharry continues to be proud of its leadership role in helping to ensure diversity in the nation’s health professions work force.
