Dr. George C. Bradley

Greetings,

The history of Paine College states that the institution was “founded in 1882 as the result of an unusual collaboration between Black and White Methodists who believed in church-related education as a means of advancement for a newly freed and underserved people.” Throughout the years, a dedicated faculty and staff have maintained high standards for students who are committed to the ideal “to love truth and seek it above all material things.”

The generous contributions of individuals and organizations such as The United Methodist Church and programs such as the Black College Fund have allowed Paine College to continue to produce, “self-sufficient and productive citizens, committed to intellectual pursuits and aesthetic appreciation in a global society.” Steeped in the liberal arts tradition, Paine College emphasizes academic excellence, ethical and spiritual values, social responsibility, and personal development.

Paine College is a beautiful 57-acre campus located in the heart of Augusta, Ga. At Paine College, we are blessed with access to important cultural and economic centers. The campus is located one hour away from Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, and it is an easy two-hour drive from Atlanta, the capital of Georgia.

With a liberal arts education as their foundation, prospective Paine College students can engage in programs and majors that are offered through the college’s five academic divisions. Current students, faculty, and staff collaborate with local leaders in business, government, and education to strengthen the community. Along with opportunities on campus, students have opportunities to engage in community activities through student organizations. Paine College sponsors more than 50 student led academic, civic, cultural, governmental, social and religious organizations as well as intramural sports and a variety of intercollegiate sports.

The vision for Paine College is to be a premier liberal arts institution in the region. This vision will be accomplished through strengthened faculty capacity, student engagement and learning outcomes, technology infrastructure development, facilities enhancement and friend raising.

Replica of the boyhood home of Frank Garvin Yerby
Over the past six months there has been a re-dedication to enhancing the legacy of Paine College. The Paine College community held the ribbon cutting ceremony for the replica of the boyhood home of Frank Garvin Yerby on the campus of Paine College. Mr. Yerby, a 1937 graduate of Paine College, published more than thirty novels that have sold more than 55 million copies and his writings have been translated into 22 languages. He was the first African American to write a best-selling novel and to have a book purchased by a Hollywood studio for a film adaptation. The campus has invested $300,000 in Phase I of a project to renovate historic Mary Helm Hall. Built in 1926, Mary Helm Hall was a gift to the college from the Woman’s Missionary Council of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.

Paine College is a small institution offering a big education. Students work with scholars and researchers from around the world. Paine College students also take advantage of experiential learning opportunities such as study abroad, internships, and conference presentations through curricula that are rich, rigorous and relevant. Through the support of the Board of Trustees, alumni, faculty, staff, students and the broader community, Paine College is an institution to watch.
