50th Anniversary

May 4, 1956 was the day! It was the day the General Conference of the former Methodist Church granted full clergy rights to women To commemorate this 50th anniversary, and to recognize the contributions, struggles, and gifts of clergywomen, The United Methodist Church declared 2006 a year-long celebration of full clergy rights for women. The cause of Christ and the mission of the Church have been strengthened and blessed by the contributions of clergywomen throughout our long history.

To help churches and universities celebrate, the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, along with the General Board of Discipleship, have collected and commissioned worship resources to celebrate women's work as ministers in The United Methodist Church. These worship services, litanies and prayers are resources for use in your annual conference, local church, or campus ministry.

We express our gratitude to the Rev. Gina F. Kim and the Rev. Martha B. Wagley, co-chairs for the International Clergywomen’s Consultation 2006 design team and to the Commission on the Status and Role of Women in the development of resources and plans for the celebration.

We pray these celebrations across the Church will lift up clergywomen’s gifts and encourage all God's people in the work Christ has for us to do.
