Dolorosa Duncan Gitagno’s journey from her small home community at the base of Africa’s highest mountain to Africa University began in October 2000. She recalls getting “fired up” by a presentation about the university at her local high school.

That presentation showed her a way to learn and fulfill her dream of a different life from those of other girls in her rural community near Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Her persistence, support from her family, and a partial scholarship from Africa University led her to enroll in September 2001.

She received her degree on May 29, 2004, becoming the first woman university graduate in her extended family. Africa University’s class of 2004 included 262 young people — 124 women and 138 men from 15 African countries.
