Traci C. West, a former Women of Color Scholar, is an ordained elder in the New York Conference. An associate professor of ethics and African-American studies at United Methodist-related Drew University, she teaches in the religion and society area of the Casperson Graduate School and the church and society division of The Theological School.

Dr. West holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University, a master’s degree from Pacific School of Religion, and a Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary. She is author of Wounds of the Spirit: Black Women, Violence, and Resistance Ethics and numerous articles on violence against women, racism, welfare policy, sexuality, and other justice issues in church and society.

The Women of Color Scholars Program, initiated by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry in 1989, helped her on the road to her considerable achievements. Along with scholarships for women of color doctoral candidates, the program includes regular mentoring and has a mission of placing women of color in United Methodist-related seminary faculty positions.
