Allocation Programs

The following are standard criteria for EVERY program offered through GBHEM:
  • Applicants must be an ACTIVE, full member of The United Methodist Church for at least ONE year. Membership is determined by the date the applicant was confirmed and took membership vows with a United Methodist church. (Members of other Methodist denominations are not eligible.)
  • Applicants must be pursuing a degree program at ANY accredited institution within the U.S.
  • High school students may apply IF they will be college students in the fall term.
  • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicants are required to be full-time students according to their school’s standards for the program for which they are enrolled.
The following program funds are allocated directly to the United Methodist colleges, universities, seminaries and theological schools. Payments for allocation programs are made payable to the student yet are mailed directly to the school. Renewal policy is determined by each school. 

The United Methodist Seminary Allocation Program

These awards are for seminary students who have chosen pastoral ministry as an ordained elder; are enrolled and nominated by a UM related seminary or theological school; and are active and full members of the UMC for at least 3 years. Contact the director of financial aid at the UM seminary for application information. Nominations from seminaries must be received in the Scholarships Department of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry by September 1.

The United Methodist Allocation to UM Colleges and Universities (UM)

These scholarships are for undergraduate students enrolled and nominated by a UM-related college or university. Applicants must be active, full members of the UMC for at least 1 year prior to nomination; and a full-time student with a grade average of B or higher. Contact the director of financial aid at the UM college or university for application information. Nominations from UM schools must be received in the Scholarships Department of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry by September 1.

The J.A. Knowles Memorial Allocation Program (KS3)

This scholarship, derived from funds established by a will, is limited to students who are Texas residents attending and nominated by a UM-related school in Texas (Huston-Tillotson University, Lon Morris College, McMurry College, Southern Methodist University, Southwestern University, Wiley College, Texas Wesleyan College, Perkins School of Theology). Applicants must be active, full members of the UMC for at least 1 year prior to nomination; GPA 2.5+; and be a full-time degree student. Contact the director of financial aid at the UM college or university for application information. Nominations from UM schools must be received in the Scholarships Department of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry by September 1.

The Conference Merit Award

These awards are funded by 10 percent of each annual conference’s total receipts to the Student Day Offering for the previous year. Participating annual conferences of the UMC may award one or more scholarships to UM students who reside in the conference and who are or will be attending a UM-related college or university. Further information, including guidelines and an application form, may be obtained from the chairperson of the annual conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry. Amount of the award and deadline for receipt of the application is set by each annual conference.
