The last five decades were the stage for many revolutionary and independence movements in the African continent. It was a time of civil war in many countries; in others, a time of profound economic development. The continent also has witnessed pandemics of AIDS, Malaria, and Ebola, leading to intense periods of famine, impoverishment and healthcare crises. Education is the key to addressing these challenges and growing in prosperity.

The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) is working in Africa to create a framework for global education that puts African countries in contact with partners in other African areas, as well as in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and North America. Regional association of African educational institutions include the Africa Association of United Methodist-related Theological Institutions (AAUMTI) and the Africa Association of Methodist Institutions of Higher Education (AAMIHE).
