Faith and Order
Nature, Mission, and Faithfulness of The United Methodist Church
It has been said that The United Methodist Church doesn’t have an ecclesiology. In 2008, the General Conference established a churchwide Committee on Faith and Order (CFO), and the Council of Bishops asked the committee to guide the church in reflecting on our ecclesiology.
The research and reflections of the Committee on Faith and Order clearly support that United Methodism does have a theology of church. The questions are: How do we recall, teach, and remind one another what we believe about church? What is our identity as a United Methodist Church?
The CFO has shared this paper with the Council of Bishops, with General Conference delegates, and with faculty of United Methodist Studies. The committee also intends to share it with Boards of Ordained Ministry and especially with those who want to serve in ministerial leadership in this denomination.
If you would like to engage in further conversation about the concepts presented in this paper, contact Russell E. Richey, the primary drafter of the resource paper and a member of the committee. Dr. Richey’s e-mail address is email@example.com.

Pastoral Appointments Overview
Every local church needs a pastor. The United Methodist Church has a unique way of matching pastors and congregations. Rather than local churches hiring and firing their own pastors-as in some denominations-United Methodist bishops appoint pastors to serve in local churches and other ministry settings.
