1996 - Deacons

Deacons Poster

At the General Conference in 1996 the church undertook a process to broaden the idea of who can be called by creating the Order of Deacons in Full Connection. In so doing, the church recognized the importance of the way the church deploys its lay leaders - in word, service, and justice.

This recognition of the new Order of Deacons in Full Connection, as with the other four dates we celebrate in 2016, is a result of the natural growth and creative tension within the Methodist church. It is an affirmation of the need to stay formally connected to the world, and of the evangelical calling of our spiritual ancestry.

Providing new opportunities for people to be in ministry in life-changing ways is as important now as it was when John Wesley’s heart was strangely warmed. The efforts of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry have been a crucial part of the growth and formation of the Methodist movement, providing both practical application of policies and ideas as well as an inspiring vision of what is possible.
