Aoyama Gakuin
Established in 1949, Aoyama Gakuin University is located in Shibuya, a hotspot of cutting-edge culture in the central Tokyo. Being a part of Aoyama Gakuin, a comprehensive educational institute founded by American Methodist Church missionaries in 1874, AGU provides a quality education based on the Christian faith. Minimum Requirements:
- 2.5 GPA minimum
- To determine language proficiency, please submit the “Evaluation of Japanese Language Proficiency” or a score report of Japanese language ability equal to N5 JLPT
In addition to the minimum requirements, students must provide:
- Application for Admission
- Letter of Recommendation
- Evaluation of Japanese Language Proficiency
- Official transcripts from the home university
- Statement of academic objectives
- Information for tutors*
- Certificate of Physical Condition
- Application for certificate of eligibility (Note: Please review the sample for each page when filling out this form.)
- Original official bank statement
- Photocopy of valid passport photo page
- 6 passport photos taken within 6 months
- Dormitory application (if applicable)
Important Dates: Students may study for a semester or academic year.

Around Campus

Courses: Aoyama Gakuin offers courses in both Japanese and English, as well as Japanese language courses. Students may choose up to 14 credits of coursework but must include a language course to supplement their Japanese proficiency. Students may choose to take courses in foreign language, literature, education, economics, business, international politics, cultural and creative studies, etc.

Additional Information
Aoyama Gakuin is wheelchair accessible in most parts.
AGU does not make special arrangements for students with learning disabilities.
They do not require students to attend religious services.
Cultural Experiences: Aoyama Gakuin has a large number of clubs and associations on campus for both local and international students to enjoy. Clubs popular with international students include Japanese culture clubs: Tea Ceremony, Flower Arrangement, Martial Arts, Calligraphy, etc. There are also opportunities to join clubs on volunteering, travelling, sports, music, manga, photography, dance, etc.
International students will be paired with a local student as a “tutor to help them with anything around campus and adjusting to life in Japan, including course registration, opening a bank account, and becoming friends.
International students will have the opportunity to visit cultural or tourist sites through AGU, including:
- Day trip by bust to tourist sites once per semester
- Kabuki theater
- Watch Sumo wrestling
- Short-term homestay
- Traditional candy art workshop
