Lowery Appointed Director of Young Adult Ministry Discernment & Enlistment

The Rev. James “Trip” Lowery III, senior pastor of Wendell United Methodist Church in North Carolina, has been appointed as the director of Young Adult Ministry Discernment and Enlistment for the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry’s Division of Ordained Ministry.

Lowery will provide leadership for the development of programs and resources for clergy discernment and enlistment, including leadership formation of young adults considering a ministerial vocation in The United Methodist Church.

His appointment, effective Jan. 7, 2013, was recommended by GBHEM’s search team and confirmed by Bishop Hope Morgan Ward.

An ordained elder in the North Carolina Annual Conference, Lowery has served on the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry since 2008 and currently serves as a candidacy mentor for those discerning first steps along the path towards pastoral leadership. Prior to entering ministry, he taught in the public school system.

He received his Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Ministry at Asbury Theological Seminary.

Lowery will report to the Rev. Rena Yocom, assistant general secretary, Ministry Discernment, Candidacy, and Theological Education in GBHEM’s Division of Ordained Ministry.

Prior to his appointment in Wendell, N.C., he served as senior pastor of Mighty Wind United Methodist Church in Nags Head, N.C., and associate pastor at Genesis UMC in Cary, N.C.
