Candidacy Financial Planning Services
The Candidacy Office at GBHEM has partnered with Wespath and EY (formerly Ernst & Young) to offer financial planning services to certified candidates for licensed and ordained ministry. The services will be offered at no cost to candidates upon certification by their district committees on ordained ministry.

Collegiate Ministers Make Iconic Pilgrimage Across Spain
Seven collegiate ministers from across The United Methodist Church joined together for Sojourn 2017. This group made the iconic pilgrimage across France and northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago, ending at the legendary burial place of St. James.

Bruce Fenner
Bruce Fenner is retiring from the United Methodist Endorsing Agency (UMEA) at the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), effective September 30, 2017, after more than seven years of service. Prior to joining UMEA in 2010, Bruce was endorsed as a chaplain within the federal prison system, where he served in institution and administrative roles for 23 years.

UMEA Endorsement Update
Over the last year, UMEA has received inquiries regarding certification with the Spiritual Care Association (SCA). This organization has evolved into a professional certifying body and provides an alternative chaplaincy board certification to those already available through the Association of Professional Chaplains, the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education and the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy to name a few.

Missio Dei Colloquy
GBHEM and AUMTS today announced plans to co-host an academic theological colloquy, “Missio Dei and the United States: Toward a Faithful United Methodist Witness.” The colloquy, planned in support of the Commission on a Way Forward, will take place November 12-15, 2017 at the Boston School of Theology, Boston University.

Women of Color Scholars
The Office of Loans and Scholarships at the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) recognized three recent Doctor of Philosophy graduates who participated in the Women of Color (WOC) Scholars Program: Mary Wong Cheng, Michele Watkins and Catherine E. Williams. Each scholar graduated in May 2017.

With great sadness, GBHEM announced the passing of Dr. Ted Brown, 65, on May 20, 2017. Brown began serving as interim associate general secretary for the Division of Higher Education on April 3, 2017. He previously served on the GBHEM Board of Directors for two consecutive quadrennia, as vice president of the Division of Higher Education. He also served as the president of the International Association of Methodist Schools, Colleges, and Universities (IAMSCU).

The Publishing Office at GBHEM announced the release of a new book, “Bid Our Jarring Conflicts Cease: A Wesleyan Theology and Praxis of Church Unity.” In this work, David N. Field examines and interprets three of John Wesley's key sermons and Wesley’s interpretation of holiness in terms of Methodist identity and diversity especially as it relates to human sexuality.

2017 CCTE Grants
The Commission on Central Conference Theological Education awarded 67 grants totaling more than $1 million to the seven Central Conferences of The United Methodist Church. The grants fund theological education advances at theological institutions, Boards of Ordained Ministry and agencies integrally related to training United Methodist pastors.

KMC Coaching Class
The Korean Methodist Church's (KMC) clergy coach program is one result of the partnership between the Clergy Lifelong Learning Office at GBHEM and the Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the KMC. Eight new KMC coaches have been trained and certified through the program.
